Frequently asked questions
Common questions we get asked about Solar & Battery Storage
How much does a typical solar system cost?
A 4kWp residential solar array (around 10 panels) is typically £6,000–£8,500 installed. Adding a 5–10 kWh battery typically adds £5,000–£8,000. SolEnergy will quote properly after the site survey.
What’s the payback time?
With current electricity prices and SEG rates, most residential systems pay back in 7–10 years. Adding a battery improves self-consumption and shortens payback in homes with high daytime usage.
Do I need scaffolding?
Yes, for safety. Scaffolding typically goes up the day before install and comes down a couple of days after. It’s included in the quote.
Can I add a battery to my existing solar?
Yes — usually with a battery-only AC-coupled system. SolEnergy will assess whether your existing inverter is compatible or whether a hybrid replacement is more cost-effective.
What’s SEG and do I qualify?
Yes. Because the system is wired PoE recording locally to the NVR, it keeps running and recording with no internet at all. Broadband is only needed for remote viewing when you’re away from the property — lose the connection and the system still records everything; you just can’t watch it live until it’s back.
Do cameras work in the dark?
Smart Export Guarantee — the scheme that pays you for excess solar you export. You qualify if your install is MCS-certified and your supplier has a SEG tariff. We handle the application.
Does it pair with my EV charger?
Yes — especially well with a Zappi charger, which can divert excess solar to your car automatically. SMC Electrical handles the EV side; SolEnergy handles the solar side. Same team, same quote.
